The Oreland Volunteer Fire Company (OVFC) was founded in 1908 with a horse-drawn fire wagon, but no horse. The members had to pull and push the wagon to the scene when a fire struck.
Today, OVFC is still a 100% volunteer organization that is always looking for people who are willing to help us get to where we need to be.
There are two types of membership:
Active Firefighting Member: You must be at least 16 years of age to become an active firefighting member of the fire company. Active firefighting members are expected to participate in weekly drills, attend monthly meetings and respond to calls. All training and equipment are provided or paid for by the fire company.
Active Non-Firefighting Member: This membership includes those that are not able to participate in firefighting but want to help the company administratively. These members attend the monthly business meetings and participate in company committees. Activities include fund raising, public relations, fire prevention, technology, and many others. Fire companies can't survive without administrative personnel.
Anyone interested in joining the fire company, or who just wants to learn more, can drop by the firehouse Monday nights, 7-9 p.m. or Sunday mornings, 10 a.m. to noon.
